The autumn of 2021 brought not only the vibrant colours of falling leaves to Brno but also a significant environmental initiative - 468 new trees planted along the cycle path. This project, initiated by the Czech Railway Administration as part of the replacement planting for Brno-South, quickly gained public interest and enthusiasm.
Now, three years later, the cycle path is a flourishing green corridor, showcasing its beauty through all four seasons and proving the success of this initiative.
The trees planted along the cycle path symbolise not only environmental responsibility but also contribute to the health and well-being of local residents. With an average trunk circumference of 14-16 cm at the time of planting, these trees have established a strong foundation for future growth, providing shade, reducing heat stress, and improving air quality.
A crucial factor in the high survival rate of these trees has been the use of TerraCottem. This soil conditioner enhances water retention around the root zone, ensuring optimal moisture availability and reducing irrigation needs, even in the critical early growth stages. As a result, tree loss has been minimal, making this project an example of effective urban forestry management.
Another key indicator of this planting’s success is the commitment to care and the precautions taken at the time of planting. From the selection of resilient tree species to proper soil preparation and the use of advanced conditioning technology, every step was carefully planned to maximize survival and long-term growth. The contracting authority, the Railway Administration, requested the contractor, KAISLER Ltd., to provide a five-year maintenance and guarantee for the trees. The commitment to care has proven effective, with minimal tree losses recorded—only 2 trees in the first year and 6 in the second year, resulting in an impressive 98.26% survival rate.
Additionally, great care was taken during the initial planting phase to ensure the best possible conditions for tree establishment. The trees were properly staked, their root systems were carefully positioned to avoid stress, and nutrient-rich soil amendments were applied. During the first year, the trees were watered six times, with each receiving 50 liters per session, ensuring their healthy establishment and resilience against environmental stressors. The survival rate remains remarkably high, demonstrating the effectiveness of careful planning and innovative planting techniques.
A carefully curated range of tree species was chosen to ensure seasonal variety, resilience to urban conditions, and long-term sustainability.
